Basic Hummus

Dips, Sauces and Spreads

We love hummus in my house, and no one loves it more than my 2 year old son. It's been his favorite food since he was able to eat solid food! He seriously could eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday and not get sick of it, so needless to say we always have some kind of hummus in the fridge.

I'm sharing my basic hummus recipe with you today to show you how incredibly simple it is to make homemade hummus. It takes less than 10 minutes to whip up and not only is it superior in flavor to the store bought stuff, but it's not laden with sodium and preservatives! Also, homemade has real lemon juice instead of the citric acid they put in the store-bought variety. Once you get the basic hummus recipe down, you can experiment with all sorts of flavors like adding roasted red pepper or garlic, Spinach and artichoke - whatever flavor you want! So much fun and oh so yummy.

  • 1 tsp Cumin
  • Juice of one Lemon
  • 3 tbsp Tahini
  • Reserved Chickpea cooking water (I like my hummus slightly thicker so I use about 2 tbsp)
  • 1-1/2 cups freshly cooked Chickpeas
  • Sea Salt and Freshly Ground Pepper, to taste
  • 1 large Garlic clove
  • 3 tbsp Extra Virgin Olive oil
  • Place all ingredients in a food processor, except reserved water and blend a couple minutes until completely smooth. While the processor is running, add Chickpea water, a tbsp or so at a time until you get the consistency you want. That's it!
